The Little Mermaid
Being continuously subjected to vandalism and destruction since its unveiling more than 100 years ago, the little mermaid statue located in Copenhagen, Denmark has never been in a stable physical state. Aside from its essential physical and formal constituents, this artifact is also made of temporal states that represent it’s continuous change over time. Using images collected online that depict the statue in different states (broken, destroyed, painted over etc.) I construct a singular state in the form of a video. The found images slowly get overlaid, creating a singular depiction, a temporal and true representation. The cutout grid installation shows phantom images that are residues of this operation. In essence, the images themselves can’t accurately represent the object, only when they all come together, a true representation emerges.
