Get Ready To Be Disappointed
In seeking the ideal future, we inevitably face moments of disappointment, a reality accentuated by the intricacies of contemporary society. As social, governmental, and cultural systems evolve, they present a multitude of pathways, each offering new potentials—and new chances for dissatisfaction. Disappointment, diverse in its forms and intensities, serves as a revealing force, exposing what we cherish, wish for, and hope to preserve. It surfaces hidden desires, illuminating parts of ourselves that often remain obscured.
This project emerged from my own experience of this feeling. Reflecting on an old family photograph—my five-year-old self on vacation, holding a broken toy giraffe—I recall the sensation of disappointment with surprising clarity. That small moment, frozen in time, encapsulates a feeling that is so common yet mostly overlooked and avoided.
Through this photographic series, I aim to bring disappointment into focus. Some images document significant life events; others capture fleeting, everyday disappointments. The series is interwoven with symbolic and abstract images, creating a visual language of unpredictability and ambiguity—states that underlie the feeling of disappointment. Together, these images invite reflection on the shared, often hidden, experiences that define the deeper self.
